Your final grade is your current grade and your final exam blended by the final’s weight: final grade = current grade × (1 − final weight) + final exam score × final weight.
Final grade = C × (1 − w) + F × w
- Final weight is a decimal: 25% = 0.25
- Your current grade counts for the rest: 1 − 0.25 = 0.75
- 84% now and 80% on a 25% final: 63 + 20 = 83%
- Score needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
- Needing over 100% means the target is out of reach without extra credit

Working backwards
To find the score you need, rearrange: (grade you want − current grade × (1 − w)) ÷ w. For an 85% from an 84% with a 25% final: (85 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 88%.

Points-based classes
If the class adds up points, the final’s weight is its points divided by the course total: a 200-point final in a 1,000-point course is worth 20%.
